Monstrous bodies

This project grew out of Touch/Untouch and greatly informed the Bird Lady but in many ways remains ongoing. Feeling alienated from my body and my desires, I increasingly connected the cravings and impulses I could identify with monstrosity. This led to years of research into monster myths and legends (in particular, monsters characterized as female), historical women described as monstrous, and respectability politics in general. The works in this section are early explorations of monster self portraits playing with themes of opulence, obfuscation, and contorted posture.
